Fifty years after their founding by the poet and graphic artist Aldona Gustas in 1972, the Berliner Malerpoeten - Berlin Painter-Poets - have arrived with an anniversary exhibition in the west of the city on the renowned art mile of Fasanenstrasse. So far, Berlin has not done anything to give this multi-layered group, which was significant for the development of art and culture in post-war West Berlin, the status and public attention it undoubtedly deserves.
In addition to Aldona Gustas, the group included internationally celebrated as well as primarily locally esteemed artists and literary figures: Günter Bruno Fuchs, Günter Grass, Roger Loewig, Artur Märchen, Christoph Meckel, Kurt Mühlenhaupt, Karl Oppermann, Oskar Pastior, Robert Wolfgang Schnell, Wolfdietrich Schnurre, Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern, Joachim Uhlmann Hans-Joachim Zeidler.
Aldona Gustas, the only woman, was the head, curator and manager of the group. She organized exhibitions for the Malerpoeten in the 1980s and edited several anthologies for them. In 2014, she once again co-curated an exhibition for the group with us at Browse Gallery in Kreuzberg.
The Berlin Malerpoeten are undoubtedly a flowering of postwar West Berlin culture and owe their existence, Gustas says, "to the insularity of West Berlin at the time." However, there is no scheme for the interplay of image and word in the work of the individual artists. The artistic spectrum of the group is broad and multi-layered. The exhibition with about 50 paintings and literary works offers a nice opportunity to discover or re-encounter this complexity of the Berlin painter-poets.
We are pleased to have won the patron, art connoisseur and friend of the Berlin painter-poets Jochen Fey as curator for the current exhibition. In the 1960s and 1970s, Fey worked with the gallery owner Springer, who is regarded as the discoverer of Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern and established his traditional gallery on Fasanenstrasse. For the Malerpoeten anniversary, Jochen Fey is also organizing the exhibition venue on Fasanenstrasse: the auction house Nosbüsch und Stucke is generously making rooms available for the show - in the neighborhood of the Springer Gallery. This closes a circle and the Berlin painter-poets will hopefully receive the attention of the art world and the public they deserve at this illustrious location.
