Side program photo exhibition Vibes: Jazz Concert – Film – Talks
Accompanying our exhibition Vibes. The Essence of the Moment. Black & White Photos of the Berlin Jazz Days (60s/70s) by Axel Benzmann, hosted in the context of the European Month of Photography Berlin 2023 (EMOP 2023), and kindly supported by Berliner Festspiele / Jazzfest Berlin we have organize a side program with music, film and talks, check it out!
All events will take place in the rooms of the exhibition Vibes at Zimmer 48, Zossenerstr. 48, 10961 Berlin.
Ticket reservations are required for all events except the exhibition opening. There are a limited number of available seats (20) and a few additional standing places. Links for reservations via Pretix can be found under each program item. Ticket reservations are valid until 30 minutes before the start of the event. By then they must have been picked up/paid for them at the box office in the venue Zimmer 48. Otherwise, we may give them to other interested parties.

11.3.2023 4 pm Beat it! Artist Talk Zam Johnson:
From Los Angeles to Berlin: drummer, composer, painter and performance artist Zam Johnson gives a very personal tour of the exhibition. Having grown up in Watts, Los Angeles with the children of some of the jazz greats depicted in the exhibition, Zam takes out some of Axel Benzmann’s photo portraits during his talk to tell of personal encounters with the jazz musicians depicted and how these encounters influenced his own musical path.

12.3.2023 Film afternoon and discussion
- 4 pm Film: DE LAATSTE SESSIE – LAST DATE ERIC DOLPHY The documentary film DE LAATSTE SESSIE – LAST DATE ERIC DOLPHY (1991 /2004, 92 min., NL with English UT) by Hans Hylkema, about the music and life of new jazz pioneer Eric Dolphy, who gave a concert in Berlin in 1964, where he collapsed during it and later died, will be shown. Author and jazz fan Hartmut Topf drove him to the hospital at the time. He shares this and other memories in a conversation following the film.
- 6 pm Talk about the beginnings of the Jazz Days with the author and contemporary witness Hartmut Topf and the author and jazz expert Wolf Kampmann, moderated by Ulf Drechsel (music journalist)
Topic: The beginnings of the Jazztage, its contemporary reception in post war Berlin and what we have left of it.

15.3.2023 7 pm Jazz Performance: Zam’s Cool Vibes Trio
Zam Johnson: drums, David Beecroft: saxophone, Carmelo Leotta: bass Johnson.
The trio’s performance references the music of the jazz greats pictured.
