HIPGNOSIS. BREATHE – 50 Years of The Dark Side of the Moon

HIPGNOSIS  BREATHE. Album Cover Art & Photo Design by Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, LUDWIGGALERIE Oberhausen

21.01.2024 - 20.05.2024
Curation: John Colton & Aubrey Powell

Pink Floyd released their album The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973. The record sleeve was designed by the British art house HIPGNOSIS, founded in 1969 by Pink Floyd friends Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. The album is an icon of rock music history. The music and cover of the record became cult, as did Pink Floyd and HIPGNOSIS.

The Browse Gallery is presenting its largest HIPGNOSIS travelling exhibition to date to mark the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon in the LUDWIGGALERIE at Schloss Oberhausen.

Over three floors, many HIPGNOSIS works that have not yet been seen by the public in Germany is  on display in the museum.

Hipgnosis designed some of the most famous album covers in music history between 1968 and 1983. For Pink Floyd, these included Atom, Heart Mother, Wish You Were Here and Animals. For Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy and Presence, for Genesis The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and for Peter Gabriel Car, Scratch and Melt. In total, over 415 cover designs were created.

The exhibition brings together the duo's most important designs and presents them on large-format limited edition prints. The exhibition is a co-operation between the Browse Gallery Berlin and the Ludwiggalerie, Schloss Oberhausen.
